The members of the Society of African Missions are mourning the death of their dear confrere, Fr John Casey, who died peacefully on Monday evening, 2 March 2015. Known to most as ‘Jack’ he was a missionary in Nigeria for nearly 40 years, where he was a noted educationalist and highly-regarded as a Mathematics teacher.
Fr Jack was 84 years old and, for several years, had been in failing health. Since 2000 he lived at the African Missions, Blackrock Road, Cork. As his health began to deteriorate he moved into St Theresa’s Nursing Unit in 2009. His confreres and family members had been keeping vigil by his bed for the past week. With him when he died was his niece, Mary, and Fr Seán Lynch SMA. They had just finished reciting the Rosary when Fr Jack slipped peacefully away to his eternal rest.
Fr Jack is survived by his brother, Bill, and sister, Bina [Coughlan], nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews.
May he rest in peace.
