US cuts back HIV support for Kenya

President Barack Obama has agreed to a sharp reduction in USAID funding for Aids Relief in Kenya and several other countries. This will negatively affect the country’s fight against the disease. The President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief [PEPFAR] provides funding for 70% of Kenya’s Aids relief. Since 2005 the number of Kenyans benefitting from retroviral drugs has climbed sharply from 35,000 to 640,000.

PEPFAR is cutting back funding from 47 countries to just 10. It is intended that ALL funding will cease by 2015.
