Death of Fr James Higgins SMA, MFR

The death has taken place on Sunday, 3 April 2016, of Fr James Joseph Higgins SMA, MFR, at the SMA House, Blackrock Road, Cork.

Fr Higgins was in failing health for some time and died peacefully in his room at 12.45am. His remains are now resting in the Community Oratory before removal to St Joseph’s SMA Church, Wilton after Prayers for the Dead at 7pm, Monday, 4 April. He will be buried in the adjoining Community cemetery after 12 noon Concelebrated Requiem Mass on Tuesday, 5 April.

Fr Higgins spent 60 years as a missionary in Nigeria, many of them in the education apostolate, retiring to Ireland in 2010.

He was elected by his brother SMAs to represent them at the 1973 and 1983 Irish Provincial Assemblies. He also served as Society Superior in Warri from 1983-1989.

For his education work in Nigeria he was awarded the State honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic by President Shehu Shagari in 1992. In 2009 he received the Papal decoration – Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice – from Pope Benedict XVI for his services to the Church in Nigeria.
